📋 Before Surgery: Preparation & Fasting

Preparation is crucial for surgical success and anaesthetic safety. When you book a procedure with Palm Gardens, our team provides detailed instructions to ensure your pet is ready.

⚠️ Mandatory Overnight Fasting Rule:

Your pet must be fasted from 20:00 the evening before surgery. Do not feed breakfast, treats, or bones on the morning of admission. Clean drinking water should remain accessible overnight and removed when you wake in the morning.

  • Pre-Surgical Consultation: A thorough physical examination to confirm your pet is in good general health prior to surgery.
  • Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Screening: Recommended for all patients, and strongly advised for senior pets (7+ years), to check kidney and liver function before administering anaesthetic agents.
  • Morning Drop-Off (07:30 – 08:30): Arrive during our morning admissions window so your pet can settle into our calm pre-theatre ward.
  • Client Consent & Emergency Details: Reviewing surgical consent forms and confirming your daytime contact telephone numbers.

We understand that putting a beloved pet under general anaesthesia can cause anxiety. Our clinical approach prioritises modern safety standards and individualised medication dosing.

  • Pre-Medication & Pain Pre-Emption: Administering gentle sedatives and analgesics before surgery begins to eliminate pain pathways early.
  • Intravenous Catheterisation: Maintaining direct venous access for warmed intravenous fluid therapy, supporting steady blood pressure.
  • Multi-Parameter Patient Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate, pulse quality, respiratory pattern, and body temperature.
  • Dedicated Veterinary Supervision: Our veterinary team monitors your pet from the moment induction begins until they are awake and swallowing comfortably.

🏡 Recovery & Post-Operative Aftercare

Surgical care does not end when the incisions are closed. Smooth recovery and pain management are vital to healing.

  • Supervised Theatre Recovery: Waking up in a warm, quiet, padded recovery kennel with warm towels and gentle nursing attention.
  • Same-Day Discharge (16:00 – 17:30): Most routine surgeries go home the same afternoon once our veterinarians are fully satisfied with alertness and mobility.
  • Clear Discharge Guidance: Detailed written instructions regarding feeding light meals that evening, administering take-home pain medication, and monitoring wound healing.
  • Activity Restrictions & E-Collars: Guidance on leash-only walks, avoiding stairs or jumping, and keeping an Elizabethan collar or protective vest on to prevent licking.
  • Complimentary Follow-Up & Suture Removal: Post-operative check-ups and suture removal (usually 10 to 14 days post-op) are included with your surgical care.
